Championing OBE, Employability, and Sustainability

by | Jan 3, 2024 | Bicol Mail

The University of Nueva Caceres successfully held the Annual University C.A.R.E. – Colloquium on Academics, Research, and Extension on December 7, 2023, at the UNC Social Hall. UCARE was made possible through the collaboration of the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs headed by Dr. Romeo M. Sumayo Jr., and the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, and Linkages headed by Engr. Christine Bautista. This year, we are bannering the theme: Caring for the community through outcome-based education (OBE) and sustainable development solutions.

As we embrace UNC’s Diamond era, we are primed to be a leading Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Provider in Bicol, an epicenter of institutional research in the Region, a trailblazer in national and global linkages, and home of programs recognized locally and internationally. A testament to this is the distinction from the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA), one of the most credible accreditation associations in the country, catapulting UNC as the institution with the highest number of accredited programs in the Bicol Region – for the second consecutive year. At the vortex of this victory, in the middle of this milestone is UNC’s Captain and Commander-in-Chief, our University President, Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya. Highlighting the promising signs and exciting opportunities ahead, President Fay set a great start for this much-anticipated UCARE.

Outcome-Based Education (OBE)

As educators, we are always raring and ready to ensure that our students acquire the necessary skills, competencies, and attitudes. We are on a mission to better understand, better appreciate and better optimize outcome-based education to improve the quality of teaching and learning. During UCARE, the UNC community was extremely pleased and privileged to be mentored by a highly esteemed authority in the field, Dr. Jonathan Macayan, a leader of leaders, and a mentor of masters. He is a University Fellow from our sister school, the internationally distinguished MAPUA University. He brought to us a great breadth and depth of perspectives on outcome-based education.

Employability and Excellent Student Outcomes

The University of Nueva Caceres nurtures students to be future-ready, work-ready, and life-ready. We are a coaching community – from enrollment to employment and from campus to communities and careers. On the Talk on Employability, we were honored to have with us via Zoom, one of UNC’s major partners and movers on employability, the Account Director of LinkedIn Philippines, Miss Coral Taylor. LinkedIn is the world’s leading and most trusted platform for professionals, job seekers, employers, and organizations around the globe. Miss Taylor shared extensive insights on employability and global careers and offered tips and trends on leveraging LinkedIn to enhance job prospects.

UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)

UNC creatively caters to the characteristics and contexts of our 21st-century learners and global citizens, allowing them to immerse in meaningful educational experiences, flexible learning modalities, and life-changing interactions. UNC’s educational innovations aim to expand opportunities for all so that Everybody Makes It – and add value to this highly globalized, Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous (VUCA) world. We challenge our students to be game-changers and difference-makers on a global scale. Shedding light on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), we were delighted to have in UCARE a gifted inventor of our time, Principal Engineer at Collins Aerospace PH and Part-time Professor at Mapua University, Engineer and Doctor Mark Christian Manuel, former Research Fellow from the Department of Science and Technology.

Session Reaction

It was immensely encouraging to listen to the Session Reaction of Dr. Jean Paulette Salalima-Go, the Education Supervisor II of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Regional Office 5. She gave a most inspiring commendation and comments on the work invested in the conduct of UCARE, the credibility of our top-notch resource speakers, the relevance of the discussion content, and the advocacy of the University of Nueva Caceres behind the delivery of the agenda. Her great reception of this event ignited our commitment to sustain our efforts in championing outcome-based education (OBE), employability, and sustainable development solutions.

Caring for the Community

UCARE afternoon session featured OBE Faculty Research Presentations and Student Parallel Sessions on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Capping off this triumphant occasion was the Closing Message by Dr. Romeo M. Sumayo Jr., UNC Vice President for Academic Affairs and a major proponent of our University’s sustainable development solutions. A hugely successful fellowship of future-thinking educators, UCARE has become an avenue to exchange ideas and explore best practices, ignite inspiration, and spark creativity as we strive to conquer uncharted territories and push the envelope further in the name of “caring for the community through outcome-based education (OBE), employability, and sustainable development solutions.” All glory to God!
