by | Mar 11, 2025 | Announcement, Updates

The University of Nueva Caceres proudly spearheaded the Turn-over and Unveiling of San Francisco Church Marker held last February 20, 2025 at the San Francisco Parish. After years in safekeeping, UNC’s Museum Curator Mr. Paolo Suzara, in coordination with the National Historical Commision of the Philippines made this initiative, to return the marker to its rightful place, underscores UNC’s dedication to safeguarding cultural heritage and ensuring that historical artifacts are preserved and appreciated by future generations.

Present during the event were Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya, University President, Dir. Carminda R. Arevalo, Executive Director, National Historical Commission of the Philippines, Mr. Juan Paolo Suzara, UNC Museum Curator, Fr. Wilfred Almoneda, Parish Priest, Mr. Alvin R. Alcid, Deputy Executive Director, National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and Mr. Benjamin Paculan Jr., Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) Chairman.

The Return of the Marker to Its Rightful Place

The University of Nueva Caceres Museum, being the second oldest school-based museum in the Philippines, is home for an extensive number of artifacts dating back to the pre-colonial era, as well as relics from the Spanish, American, and Japanese occupations. The museum also holds an archive of preserved books, newspapers, and magazines from the 1800s, along with memorabilia of UNC’s founder, Dr. Jaime Hernandez.

One of the historical pieces within the UNC Museum’s collection was the original marker of San Francisco Parish in 1950. The significance of this marker was rediscovered when a staff member from San Francisco Church visited the museum and recognized it as the very marker installed in their church decades ago.

Due to the absence of historical records confirming its provenance in the UNC Museum, the University of Nueva Caceres acknowledges the significance of returning the marker to its rightful place, ensuring its historical and cultural value is preserved and honored.

UNC’s Commitment to Historical Preservation

The turn-over of the San Francisco Church Marker is more than just a ceremonial event—it is a testament to UNC’s unwavering commitment to historical conservation. By spearheading this initiative, the university reaffirms its role as a steward of cultural heritage, working closely with institutions like the NHCP to uphold the preservation of significant historical landmarks.
UNC continues to foster a deep appreciation for history and culture through its museum and various initiatives. The return of the marker serves as a symbol of unity between the university and the local community, strengthening the bond between education and heritage preservation.

Through endeavors like this, UNC remains steadfast in its mission to educate, preserve, and inspire—ensuring that history is not only remembered but also celebrated and respected for generations to come.
